Translation Problems in Languages for Specific Purposes: Economic Text

In the context of economic globalization, economic interactions between countries are becoming more frequent and activities in the economic and financial spheres are gradually increasing. In order to facilitate communication and exchange in the economic sector, economic and financial English translation is particularly important. German School of functionalist translation theory appeared in the 1970s and there are four main stages: Katharina Reiss’s functionalist translation criticism, Hans J. Vermeer’s Skopostheorie, Justa Holz Manttari’s translation action theory and Christiane Nord’s text analysis model. Vermeer’s Skopostheorie is the most significant among these theories. According to Skopostheorie，“Skopos rule” is the supreme rule and the translation action is decided by the purpose of it，which means “the end justifies the means”. Also one of the important theories is the textual typology of the British translation theorist Peter Newmark. Through analysis and illustration, this paper selects financial articles from well-known foreign news websites, such as the New York Times and the Financial Times, analyzes the main content and characteristics of the financial articles, and determines the communicative purpose of the translated text in its context according to why and for whom the translator is translating. Using these theories of translation as a guide, the author summarizes the characteristics of economic and financial English texts at the level of vocabulary, syntax and discourse, and discusses how to achieve the treatment of vocabulary, sentences and discourse of financial English texts, with the aim of making the translation meet the principles of accuracy, fluency and brevity, so that the readers of the translated text can achieve maximum understanding and achieve the translation purpose of the text to accurately convey information. At the same time, the author hopes that his findings will provide some lessons and inspiration to scholars engaged in economic and financial English translation.
