Year of Graduation: 2020

After the World War II, the reconsideration of previous functionalist architectural approaches started, leading to new methods, one of which is critical regionalism. Diffusion of different traditions led to the emergence of new forms and elements. Although some research exists on the subject of Moroccan postwar architecture, it is mostly focused on socio-political aspects of the built environment, and even less consideration was given to distinct architects, such as Jean-François Zevaco. This work attempts to fill in this gap by examining his edifices built between 1940s and 1990s in various Moroccan cities, and how they were constructed due to the local and modernist contexts. The paper offers a detailed formal examination of his oeuvre, putting it into the architectural and cultural contexts, and aims to formulate his artistic method in order to distinguish his place in history of architecture.
