The Architecture of the Sanatoriums of the Black Sea Coast of the USSR from “Thaw” to “Stagnation”

This study is devoted to the examination of architecture of Soviet sanatoriums on Black Sea coast from “Thaw” to “Stagnation”. The special attention is drawn not only to architecture of sanatoriums, but to historical, cultural, and social aspects of their construction. Actuality of the chosen topic is conditioned, firstly, to the lack of knowledge about soviet modernist architecture of sanatoriums of this region and, secondly, to the importance of rethinking of architecture of this period to get it under state protection. The aim of the work is to identify main trends of construction of sanatoriums from the end of 1950s to the middle of 1980s. Some sanatorium of Crimea, Sochi, and Abkhazia region were analyzed and the origins of Soviet sanatorium’s architecture were examined. As a result, intended objectives were reached and the aim was achieved successfully. Moreover, the great corpus of literature, including documentary and legal acts, was surveyed. The basis for the future studies about sanatoriums of Black Sea of this time was created.
