Slang words are an integral part of the spoken and written discourse, but only a few practical studies on the subject of youth slang have been carried out on the material of the Russian language. The objective of this paper is to conduct a survey among students and identify a certain pattern of whether gender affects the use of slang. For this, 12 slang words were selected and a survey was conducted among students from 17 to 23 years old. The survey consisted of four parts to get the most accurate answer from informants. The first part of the survey consisted of sentences with a missing word, the second and third parts suggested that informants write their examples and a personal assessment of the words (positive, negative or neutral), the fourth part of the survey was an assessment of the frequency of use of slang words on a five-point scale. In addition to gender, information about age and education was collected. When enough answers were collected, we checked the significance of the results using Fisher's exact test. The data obtained were statistically significant.
