The master's thesis is dedicated to the image of the East in the works of three German romanticists: Ludwig Tieck, Achim von Arnim and Wilhelm Hauff. Its main purpose was to describe how the Eastern space of these writers was changing from Tiek to Hauff, gradually becoming more complicated, and to show what the general trend could be revealed. The work conducted a brief study of the emergence of orientalism in 19th-century Germany and explained the connection between Eastern interest and the idea of national identity. The focus of the dissertation were novels with fairy-tale elements of these writers: "Almansur" and "Abdallah" by Tieck, "Isabella von Ägypten" and "Meluck Maria Blenville" by Arnim and almanacs of Hauff's fairy tales. In this dissertation I develop a theory that despite all the differences in the approaches of the three romanticists, all of them seek to draw parallels between Eastern and Western space and show how they relate to each other. One of their goals was to bring the two cultures closer together and to show that they are not as different and foreign, unfamiliar as they may seem at first sight.
