The first approaches to describing the complex structure of the novel “The General and His Army" were made in the present research. The first chapter of the paper is devoted to the analysis of the influence of the 19th-century prose (represented by N. V. Gogol and L. N. Tolstoy) on the structure of the novel. In the second chapter, the novel is analyzed in comparison with the literary traditions of the 20th century: general's memoirs (Sevastyanov P. V., Moskalenko K. G., etc.), "Lieutenant's prose" (Bonadrev Yu. V.) and "General's prose" (Simonov K. M).
