Year of Graduation: 2020

In the aftermath of the Ukraine crisis, it became clear to scholars and to government officials in Washington, Brussels, Moscow and Kiev, that this crisis would generate profound consequences that will affect Europe’s security system, not to mention the restoration of the unevenness that had already once separated the European Continent. Therefore, concerning questions and hypothesis arose about EU-Russia relations in the international community. Research Question and Dissertation Task The aim of this qualitative research is to analyse relations between Russia and the European Union from the End of the Cold War until the present day, in order to demonstrate how the inadequate EU policies towards Russia in the post Cold War period unleashed a series of problematic dynamics that eventually led to the outbreak of the Ukraine crisis in 2014. In so doing, I intend to demonstrate that Russia’s posture is primarily defensive and , to a certain extent, less threatening than EU’s inadequate policy.
