Mythological and Folklore Motifs in the Margins of Flemish Illuminated Manuscripts of the XIII-XV Centuries

Student: Heiremans Alina

Supervisor: Oleg Voskoboynikov

Faculty: Faculty of Humanities

Educational Programme: Medieval Studies (Master)

Year of Graduation: 2020

The study attempts to draw a link between folklore and marginal imagery in Flemish manuscripts of the 13-15 centuries and shows that most of the marginal images refer to particular folk narratives and proverbs or are otherwise shaped in accordance with the basic principles of folklore; likewise, it proves that marginal imagery has been heavily influenced by the urban spectacle and carnivalesque celebrations.
