In the paper are considered theoretical aspects, including the definition of key terms as well as an overview of the scientific literature and approaches to the topic. The third chapter also describes and analyzes the historical dynamics of distance education development and provides an overview of the global market for educational technologies. The fourth chapter includes a review of the Russian online education market. The review included the main players of the Russian online education market in b2b and b2c segments, and conclusions were drawn on capitalization and turnover of these companies. In the fifth chapter I conducted a statistical analysis of a representative sample of the population in Russia, which initially included 12,161 observations (some observations were excluded from the analysis). A weak correlation was established between the involvement of the population in the process of distance learning and satisfaction with life and income. However, this relationship cannot be called significant on representative data on the Russian population. The main objective of the study was achieved - the hypothesis of the relationship between the living standards of people and the development of online education was tested. Several aspects of potential impact have been considered. Growing markets have a positive impact, and online education has made the process of obtaining knowledge geographically more accessible and cheaper. However, statistically, the importance of the impact of the use of the Internet by individuals to obtain reference materials and study, which is the basis for further research, has not been proven.
