This project proposal presents an investigation that focused on problems that arise during the process of second foreign language learning, namely Spanish language, in the secondary school in Russia. The study is based on the analysis of Russian Federal State Secondary Education Standards (or FGOS, as accepted in Russia) and the results of a survey, carried out among Spanish language school students who learn Spanish as the second foreign language. The highlighted problems are overestimated expectations of the level of linguistic competences in Spanish language among the students; an inadequate level of difficulty of the State Exams and the absence of coherence between the exams and actual learning outcomes; a scarcity of course books and teaching materials; a lack of students’ motivation. This paper aims on presenting an overview on these problems in terms of learning Spanish as the second foreign language. Key words: Spanish, second foreign language, language learning, FGOS
