Fact Checking in Data Journalism

At the moment, there are no descriptions of real and working tools of fact-checking in data-journalism. There is no understanding of how the practice of fact-checking differs in data-journalism and how important this practice is for data-journalism as a quality standard for data-stories. This article researches factchecking as a unified and systematic process for verifying journalistic material at all levels. The study determines the importance of factchecking in the creation of material and its relevance today. The methods used in the article include analysis of the history of factchecking and verification in journalism, analysis of factchecking functions and classification. The article deals with the theoretical aspect of the term, presents the differences between fact-checking and verification of information, describes the main functions of fact-checking, analyzes the established practices of fact-checking in the editorial offices, etc., analyzes the editorial documents of foreign and domestic media for the display in them the practices of fact-checking of data-materials. On the basis of the study of editorial standards of the editions mentioned in this article and practices of materials fact-checking in the context of data-journalism, recommendations on data-materials verification are presented, which can be implemented in the editorial documents of media, become the basis for creating a separate provision on data-history verification or a work guide for specialists in this field.
