In the wake of the decarbonisation of the EU economies, the continuation of the energy trade of fossil fuels between Germany and Russia is threatened. Since the 1970s the states have been enjoying fruitful economic collaboration in the energy field, which was challenged firstly by political disputes, like the conflict of values and approaches to domestic and foreign politics which were provoked mainly by the Navalny case and joining of the Crimean Peninsula. Though the political frictions are increasing year by year, commercial relations prosper. The securitisation of the climate change issues and the following extreme measures for the sake of environmental protection appeared to be a more serious threat to the economic relations between Germany and Russia. This paper tries to provide reasoning for the German foreign policy to Russia during the period of the German transition to a green economy, concluding that Russia is a valuable economic partner of Germany which is needed for the successful economic transformation of the European state.
