The Problem of the Norm in Psychiatry

The paradox of current mental health care is that we never have known more about mental disorder and at the same time been more uncertain about the conceptual basis. The question of distinguishing between the norm and pathology of the psyche is a fundamental for modern philosophy of psychiatry. The relevance of the research problem is determined by the fact that there is no satisfactory definition of the mental norm today, but psychiatry turn to the use of this term. Discussion of problems associated with the concept of a norm can be important not only for a philosophical discussion. First of all, it matters for research theoretical and practical issues of psychiatry, revising ways to the diagnosis and treatment of mental illness.
