This paper examines a complexity of the transportation of motor cargo in megapolises and possible ways to increase the efficiency of this process. The oversaturation of transport hubs in megapolises has made companies to implement modern tracking technologies for the betterment of the situation. In particular, geoinformation technologies represent a broad research field. The purpose of this work is to study the Russian market of geographical information systems and to develop proposals for the use of GIS to improve the efficiency of transportation of motor cargo in the metropolis. The object of research in this paper is the transport systems of megacities and, in particular, the routes of road cargo delivery, and the subject of research is information systems designed for optimal route planning. This work consists of three chapters. In the first chapter, concepts related to supply chain management are considered, information technologies used in supply chain management are studied, as well as the structure of GIS and statistics on the use of these systems are studied. In the second chapter of the work, the main concepts related to the specificity of cargo transportation in megacities are presented, the state of the transport system of St. Petersburg is studied, and the process of GIS functioning in road cargo transportation is considered. In the third part of the work, the Russian GIS market was investigated, the best system was selected using the method of relative preferences, which resulted in calculating the effectiveness of the selected system. The practical significance of the work lies in the possibility of using the results obtained from the GIS analysis by transport companies to implement programs to improve the efficiency of their activities.
