Problems of Intercultural Communication while Studying Abroad

Recently, a huge number of people travel abroad for various purposes (studies, work, new acquaintances, tourism, etc.). Many people believe that knowledge of the language of the country where an individual has gone will be enough for successful interaction in the new environment, but this is far from being true. Ignorance of intercultural features, cultural values, traditions and customs in general can be a barrier to successful interaction. Such situations arise when an individual does not have even a basic knowledge of the country to which he or she has arrived. The problem of intercultural communication and relationships is most reflected in the teaching field when a student and a teacher come from different countries. The purpose of this research work is to create a universal set of activities for the successful adaptation of international students. In order to achieve this goal, the relevant literature was analyzed in order to build a deeper understanding of intercultural communication. In addition, a survey was conducted among students studying abroad. The main objective was to identify the main problems and difficulties faced by individuals abroad. After analyzing the results of the survey, a special list of competencies needed by students studying abroad was proposed. This list included all-important information on how to behave properly, how to build communication and interact with locals. This research work will be useful to all those who have decided to go abroad, but are afraid of getting into unpleasant situations, experiencing a culture shock, or failing to pass the process of adaptation in a previously unknown country. The proposed competencies can make a significant contribution to the study of intercultural communication, and the list of adaptation activities has practical relevance and can be used for pedagogical purposes.
