Masculinity Representation Dynamics in American Rap Lyrics

Student: Boichenko Anton

Educational Programme: Applied Methods of Social Analysis of Markets (Master)

Year of Graduation: 2021

The study involves studying the dynamics of the representation of masculinity in the texts of American rappers. Using a corpus of more than 70 thousand texts by American rappers and the method of thematic modeling, the study manages to identify a number of narratives related to the image of a man. It is found that earlier the role of a man in rap is formed through his strength and resistance to the problems of poverty and crime, but in the modern history of the genre, the representation of a man is changing, moving away from a similar expression of a man.
