The Transformation of Henry Adams (1838-1918) Views on the Industrial Capitalism of the End of 19th Century the Beginning of 20th Century

Some features of modern society such as constant aspiration of the economic progress and the acquisition the biggest profit from the manufacturing, sources and trade reached a peak in the last half of the 19th century. These were rapid transformations and so it could not be unnoticed by people. Henry Adams was one of the first intellectuals who noted that society reoriented to the economic predominance in all life spheres and started the pursuit of the new ideals. This thesis explores Adams’ attitude towards industrial capitalism in his written texts. By comparing statements Adams made in different life’s periods, I trace the transformation of his worldviews and offer an explanation of how educated person of his time tried to accommodate in new realities.
