After the USSR declared war on Japan on August 8, 1945 and the offensive on the territory of Manchuria the next day, the Soviet army immediately defeated the Kwantung army and the army of Manchukuo. As cities and towns were occupied, a Soviet military administration was established in Manchuria. This work aims to study the activities of the Soviet military administration in Manchuria and to emphasize on its economic and social aspects. The main attention is paid to the problems of political control, the establishment of the economy, and the organization of daily life. Thus, the following tasks are: 1) analyze the main directions of the military administration in Manchuria; 2) consider issues of interaction between the Soviet troops and the local population, including the problem of military discipline and excesses; 3) study the Soviet economic policy in Manchuria on the example of such important directions as the emission of banknotes and the implementation of reparations (including the export of cattle, meat and dismantled equipment from Manchuria to the USSR). This dissertation utilizes published and unpublished sources. The former includes collections of documents, periodicals and memoirs. Unpublished sources, in contrast, were identified in the GARF (Funds P5446), RGAE (Funds 8875, 9022), Academia Historica (Chinese trad. 國史館) (Funds of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, National Government) in Taiwan.
