Crisis of the Family Institution: The Reasons for Divorces Among Russians

The percentage of divorce proceedings in Russia increases every year. At the moment, there is still a controversy as to why families are divorced and which family troubles have the greatest impact on the breakdown of the family. The purpose of this study is to identify and substantiate the reasons that led to the divorce proceedings. For this we use the RLMS-HSE database, combining two samples with individuals and households. Research by Russian and foreign authors was analyzed. On the basis of these studies, the factors influencing divorce rates were selected and further analyzed by the logit method. It has been found that the availability of credit, religiosity, family income, the status of widower/widow before remarriage, lack of power and the successful financial situation of men have a positive impact on the preservation of marriage. Variables such as the presence of a child before marriage, the belief that the individual and his family will live better, the lack of power and successful financial status of women, and the lack of respect for men have a negative impact on the preservation of marriage.
