The work analyzes the formation of the literary reputation of the famous author and narrator of "scenes from the common folk life" Ivan Gorbunov. The mechanisms of the formation of a literary reputation, which Gorbunov used, are considered: participation in literary communities, publication of texts in newspapers and magazines, publication of collected works. It is concluded why these mechanisms did not help Gorbunov to become a famous writer, and he remained primarily a storyteller.
