Since 1961, David Samoylov has created a number of poems, where the main image is the image of composers such as Franz Schubert, Wolfgang A. Mozart and Johann Bach. It is important that in the period of the 1960s - 1970s simultaneously with David Samoylov other poets also created texts taking the image of composers as the main image and often turning to the same personas. Nowadays there is a tendency in scholarly community to take an interest in the poetry of the second half of the 20th century and, in particular, in the poetry of David Samoylov. However, there is no scholarly study that would fully and deeply consider the image of composers in the poetry of David Samoylov and draw parallels with the images of composers in the oeuvre of other poets of the 60s - 70s of the 20th century. The purpose of the present study is to identify, outline and compare the function of the image of composers in the poetry of David Samoylov and poets of the 1960-s and 1970-s. The anticipated results are supposed to show the following. Firstly, the cultural unit is included in the text as a symbol. Secondly, a considerable development of musical art in 1950-s - 1960-s and change in the perception of the figure of a composer were reflected in the poetry of that period. Lastly, the analyzed texts contain many intertextual connections, references and allusions, which may help to compare and describe the functions of the image of the composers in the poetry of David Samoylov and other poets of the 1960-1970s.
