I use EBRD survey data from 28 transition countries to examine the relationship between societal and household gender stereotypes and the likelihood that a woman chooses to enter the labor market. The results show that, overall, women are more likely to work (by about 14%) if gender equality is more prevalent in the household. It also shows that if there is a higher prevalence of gender equality in the society as a whole, women are more likely (by 10%) to enter the labor market.
