Education: More than Economics
When it was first founded in 1992, HSE was an economics university that trained economists, managers, and sociologists. But modern education is interdisciplinary in nature, with major breakthroughs and discoveries often taking place at the crossroads of different disciplines. HSE follows the example of world-famous universities such as MIT and Caltech that integrate the study of economics, engineering, and the humanities.
HSE is now a fully comprehensive university with campuses in four cities and composed of more than 20 faculties, including electronics, computer science, mathematics, communications, media, and design, world economy and international affairs, and, most recently, physics.

Since 2013, the HSE Lyceum has operated in Moscow, providing secondary school education to more than 1,000 students. Ranking as one of the top ten schools in Russia, the school takes an innovative approach to education, giving students the opportunity to design their own curricula and take classes from HSE professors.
Preparatory Year was founded in 2014 and provides pre-university training to international students who seek to join Russian-taught programmes but could benefit from a year of intensive Russian language courses. Students choose a track (humanities, economics, or engineering) reflecting what they intend to study so that they can acquire the specific vocabulary they will need to succeed in their programme.
Undergraduate students at HSE enroll in four-year programmes that are taught in Russian, English, or a combination of both languages. Students choose for themselves up to a third of the courses required for their majors, enabling them to develop specific competencies and explore diverse areas of interest. Experiential learning and research are key to education at HSE and students must earn up to 20% of the credits required for graduation through project work, which equips them with the skills they need to begin their careers after graduation.
Since 1997, the Higher School of Economics and the London School of Economics and Political Science (a division of the University of London) have been carrying out a project unique to Russian education. Instruction at the International College of Economics and Finance (ICEF), entirely in English, is offered in programmes selected by the HSE’s U.K. partners. Graduates of the ICEF’s Bachelor’s programme receive two degrees – from HSE and the University of London.
Graduate programmes at HSE are typically two years and taught in Russian, English, or a combination of both languages. Across faculties, these programmes enable students to acquire specific competencies that are in great demand by employers. In addition to attending lectures and seminars, students gain experience through internships at research centres, corporations, and organizations in Russia and around the world. Many double-degree programmes are offered with partner universities in Europe, North America, and Asia.
More than 700 students currently study in programmes across 14 doctoral schools at HSE. Young researchers and scholars work closely with faculty advisors and benefit from HSE’s agreements with more than 300 international universities and institutions. Joint PhD and coutelle programmes are available for outstanding students.
Continuing Professional Education
Shortly after its founding, HSE began to offer continuing professional education programmes for adults seeking advanced vocational training, occupational retraining, or a second degree. Programmes are offered in business informatics, practical psychology, corporate governance, and construction and municipal services. HSE’s continuing education programmes work closely with the university’s faculties, research centres, and laboratories and they are taught by highly qualified instructors.
Advanced Master of International Business from HSE International Institute of Administration and Management offers an internationally recognized business degree.
