At last week’s Golden HSE Award Ceremony, the winners of the Silver Nestling Award included two international students: Yunying Pei (China) of the Dual Bachelor’s Programme in Data Science and Business Analytics, and Juan Sota (Spain) of the Master’s Programme in Medieval Studies. HSE News Service spoke to the two students about their courses, speaking Russian, and the reactions their families and friends had when they told them they won the Silver Nestling Award.
The registration for the 3rd International Data Analysis Olympiad (IDAO 2020) organised jointly by the HSE Faculty of Computer Science and Yandex, is open until December 15. The international competition introduces young developers and analysts to current issues in Data Science.
Dr. James Abdey, the convenor of "Data Science and Business Analytics", visited the Faculty of Computer Science from the 8th till the 11th of November. He spoke to our students about the specifics of the London exams and gave the students some advice on how to better prepare for them. James also took part in the round table with ICEF and DSBA math professors. Our 2nd-year students were given several lectures and seminars in Statistics, which James teaches at LSE.
International students come to HSE University for a variety of reasons—to experience a new culture, take interesting classes, learn Russian, or simply try something completely different. There are numerous services for international students to help ease their transition into Moscow life. One of them is the HSE Buddy System, which matches international students (both full-degree and exchange) with local 'Buddies' to help them with bureaucratic and other practical tasks.
Ilya Sobakinskikh – "HSE and University of London Double Degree Programme in Data Science and Business Analytics" student, has received a scholarship and attended the LSE summer school in July-August this year. We talked with Ilya and he told us about his trip to London.
HSE University was able to place high on the Graduate Employability Ranking (201-250), outpacing its main competitors for the first time in five years. This year, the number of candidates to the ranking was increased 15% (758 universities), with new 36 universities joining the list.

On September 5, Gorky Park will transform into a large HSE University campus, open to all. HSE Day, first celebrated in 2012, has already become a tradition. Last year, more than 70,000 people attended the event. The celebration drew students new and old, faculty members, locals, and tourists. This year will be no exception!
On July 25, upon the approval of the Moscow City Construction Supervision and the Department of Cultural Heritage of Moscow, HSE University’s new Pokrovka complex opened its doors. The complex, located at 11 Pokrovsky Boulevard, is HSE’s largest and most modern Moscow campus. Classes will begin there in September.
