Lecture on ‘ Russia and the global populist wave ’ by Steven Fish (University of California, Berkeley)

Event ended

The Faculty of World Economy and International Affairs invites everyone on March 27 to attend the lecture given by professor Steven Fish.

Talk theme: 'Russia and the global populist wave'

Phenomena of the global rise of populism has deservedly captured the attention of scholars and experts the world over. Each next victory of the left or right party leads to a new wave of debates - if the new government is populist and if it is a part of the global populist wave.

The current Russian political regime is sometimes also described as populist, yet it differs from populist parties and governments, which emergence we witness in the West. Unlike most populisms of the right, it lacks an ethnonational component; and in contrast with left populisms, it often embraces economic orthodoxy rather than profligate governmental spending.

Does it mean then that Russia is a part of the global populist wave, or Russia opposes it? Is it possible to talk about the phenomena of the "Russia populism".  If so, how does it compare to other forms? If not, how does it differ? And how does the Russian experience enrich our understanding of this social phenomena?

M. Steven Fish is tenured political science professor at the University of California, Berkeley. His research interests include legislatures, political regimes, regime change, religion and politics, and Eurasian studies. He holds degrees from Stanford, Johns Hopkins, and Cornell University.
