Norihiro Naganawa to speak on ' What a Muslim Region of Imperial Russia Tells '
On March 15 Norihiro Naganawa (Hokkaido University) will speak on "What a Muslim Region of Imperial Russia Tells". The event is organised by HSE International Laboratory 'Russia’s Regions in Historical Perspective'.
Abstract:
Based on a book Islamic Russia: Empire, Religion, and Public Sphere, 1905-1917 (Nagoya, 2017), this lecture addresses a methodology of using one region (the Volga-Urals) to explore Russia’s empire with a particular focus on religious administration, local self-government, and war. It engages with a growing literature of religious history featuring recent works on Muslim regions of the empire, as well as a challenging literature on tsarist Russia’s civil society.
Start time: 19.30
Address:21/4 Staraya Basmannaya, bld.1, room 511.
