‘HSE Is an Exceptional Chance in My Life’
Mohammed Yassir Ali Osman, from Sudan, graduated from HSE’s Master’s Programme in Population and Development. He is now a doctoral student at the HSE Doctoral School of Sociology and conducts research at the Laboratory of Social and Demographic Policies at the Vishnevsky Institute of Demography. Recently he presented his dissertation on the migration intention of African students in Russia. In this interview with the HSE News Service, Mohammed Yassir Ali Osman shares the highlights of his research, his future plans after completing his PhD, and his advice for prospective researchers.

On December 5, 2025, seminars were held by postgraduate students of the International Laboratory for Social Integration Research, Maxim Gurin and Ekaterina Dolgova.
Original: Practices for coping with gender stigma in IT education – project group members presented the results of their research at an international conference in Kazakhstan.
Olga Savinskaya, a leading research fellow at the International Laboratory for Social Integration Research, and Tamara Mkhitaryan, a research intern, presented a paper titled "Gender Regime in Educational Organizations: Action Space and Coping Practices of Female IT Students" at the international conference "Voices at the Margins: Rethinking Gender, Labor, and Belonging" in Astana, held by the Center for Entrepreneurship Research at Nazarbayev University with the support of the Ministry of Education of Kazakhstan.
The staff of the ILSIR and the Department of Sociology took part in organizing a round table on the sociology of childhood at the VII All-Russian Sociological Congress
On November 13, 2025, a discussion on the sociology of childhood was held at the HSE University as part of the 7th All-Russian Sociological Congress. The event was organized by Olga Savinskaya and Maxim Gurin, staff members of the International Laboratory of Social Integration Research and the HSE Department of Sociology, and Svetlana Mayorova-Shcheglova, professor at Moscow State University of Psychology and Education.
Natalia Bulchenko participated in the interdisciplinary conference "Comorbidity Field 2.0: Sociocultural Dimensions of Health, Illness, and Medicine"
On October 31, 2025, Natalia Vasilievna Bulchenko, a research intern at the Moscow Literary Institute for Social Studies and a second-year postgraduate student at the HSE Graduate School of Sociological Sciences, presented a paper at the interdisciplinary conference "Comorbidity Field 2.0: Sociocultural Dimensions of Health, Illness, and Medicine," organized by the HSE St. Petersburg School of Humanities and Arts, the HSE Faculty of Humanities, the HSE Ronald Franklin Inglehart Laboratory for Comparative Social Research, the Student Research Society of the Department of History of the HSE St. Petersburg School of Humanities and Arts, and the HSE Research and Study Group "History of Russian Psychiatry: New Approaches to Study."
HSE University Hosts Discussions on Coordinating Russia's Initiatives within the Women's Twenty
On February 24, the Durasov House, a part of HSE University’s Pokrovka Campus, became the setting for a meeting of the Russian Chapter of the Women Twenty (W20) Working Group. Focused on education, the digital divide, and artificial intelligence (AI), the event brought together prominent experts, including Victoria Panova, Head of the BRICS Expert Council – Russia and Vice Rector at HSE University, alongside Evgeniy Terentev, Oksana Sinyavskaya, Maya Mlyakova, Fuad Aleskerov, Olga Savinskaya, and Sergey Kosaretsky. Together, the participants explored strategies to advance Russia’s scientific, educational, and technological initiatives on the global stage.
International PhD seminar in Education | Education, Gender Inequalities and Labour Market
The third session of the International PhD Seminar in Education was successfully held on November 25. The seminar provided a platform for participants to engage in meaningful discussions and exchange ideas on pressing issues surrounding gender inequalities in education and the labor market. Meghna Khurania from Jawaharlal Nehru University, India, and Margarita Kiryushina from HSE University, Russia, delivered insightful presentations, highlighting the significance of addressing these challenges globally.

The IV International Scientific Conference "Interaction. Integration. Inclusion: labyrinths of meanings and horizons of possibilities" has recently concluded. This year, 17 sections and a round table meeting were organized, which brought together more than 400 participants interested in the study and development of socio-cultural integration from different countries and regions of Russia.

Maria Rodionova and Tamara Mkhitaryan presented the results of the search and application of interaction effects in their reports at the XII Russian Scientific Conference on the Remembrance of Yuri Levada. While on the XIX April Conference Svetlana Zhuchkova and Alexey Rotmistrov told about the research of handling missing data with CHAID.

The Roundtable, which was held on the 11th of April during the ХIХ April International Academic Conference on economic and social development, was devoted to the discussion on the role of women in the modern technological future.
Why schoolgirls do not choose STEM: searching for interaction effects in conditions of gender polarization
On the 20th of March Mkhitaryan Tamara introduced to members of the Research and Study Group (RSG) and other listeners results of applying the regression with interaction effects. Tamara`s report was based on her own database dedicated to the choice of STEM-disciplines by schoolchildren. After the report, Olga Savinskaya, Tamara`s scientific adviser, thanked her student for the active work on the topic and told listeners about the integration of research results into the work of the Department Social Protection of the population.

9th International Conference on Social Science Methodology
On September 11-16 the 9th International Conference on Social Science Methodology was held in Leicester, UK. The event was organised by the International Sociological Associaton (ISA) Research Committee on Logic and Methodology (RC33). The conference takes place every four years and brings together over 500 researchers from Europe, North America and South East Asia. Staff members of the School of Sociology - Inna Devyatko, Aigul Mavletova, Olga Savinskaya and Tatiana Khavenson - took part in the event.
