This programme introduces students to the world of antiquity and the Byzantine Empire. Courses covering ancient history, literary history, mythology, professional fundamentals, and more help to translate studies into professional knowledge. Students will also examine the perception of antiquity and Byzantine heritage in later eras and the use of ancient forms, subjects, and ideas in the art, literature, and culture of the present.
Students of the programme learn to work with various kinds of source materials, from folklore and literature to epigraphic and scientific works written in ancient Greek and Latin. While sources are the cornerstone of all historical and philological research, each approach has its own nuances. This is reflected in the programme’s tracks in Philology (Classical Philology and Byzantine Studies) and History (The History of the Ancient World and the Byzantine Empire).
