Biography

Alexander Shokhin is a well-known Russian statesman and politician, prominent economist researcher, political scientist and lawyer, Doctor of Economic Sciences and Professor.

He was born on December 25th, 1951, in Arkhangelsk region. After  graduating from the Lomonosov Moscow State University Faculty of Economics in 1974, he spent many years conducting research at Gosplan and the USSR Academy of Sciences institutes. Then A. Shokhin worked in the USSR Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

August 1991 - Minister of Labour, RSFSR; November 1991 - Deputy Chairman of the Government of the RF and at the same time Minister of Labour and Employment.

1993-1994 - Head of the Russian Agency for International Cooperation and Development, 1994 - Deputy Chairman of the Government of the RF, Minister of Economy of the RF.

In December 1993 Alexander Shokhin was elected deputy of the first RF State Duma.

In 1995 he became one of the founders of the ‘Nash dom - Rossiya' political movement and was Deputy Chairman of its Political Council.

In December 1995 A. Shokhin was elected deputy of the second RF State Duma and was the First Deputy Chairman of the State Duma in 1996-1997.

In September 1997 he became Chairman of the ‘Nash dom - Rossiya'      movement. In 1998 he gave up this post due to differences of opinion with its leader, Viktor Chernomyrdin on the direction of the party, and left the parliamentary group as well as the movement.

In September 1998 Alexander Shokhin was appointed Deputy Chairman of the RF Government in Evgeniy Primakov's cabinet, but even before his official resignation from Duma in October, resigned from this position.

In December 1999 he was elected to the third State Duma of the RF as an independent candidate. At the Duma he was Chairman of the Committee for Credit Organizations and Financial Markets, a member of the Commission on the Problems of Bankruptcy and Liquidation of Credit Organizations, a member of the Commission on the State Debt and RF Foreign Assets; he was also Chairman of the Interdepartmental Commission of the RF Security Council on Economic Security, Head of the Russian Parliament Delegation at the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe and Deputy Chairman of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe from Russia.

2002-2006 - Chairman of the Supervisory Board, ‘Renaissance Capital' investment group.

In February 2003 Alexander Shokhin was elected Chairman of the Expert Council at the Federal Commission for the Securities Market. Since 2004 he has been Vice President of the Russian Union of Industrialists and Entrepreneurs and Chairman of the Coordinating Council of Employers' Unions of Russia (CCEUR) 2005 to present - President of the Russian Union of Industrialists and Entrepreneurs; member of the RF Public Chamber.

Alexander Shokhin is a member of the Council on national priority projects and demographic policies under the President of the RF; Commission on forming and preparation of administrative staff reserve under the President of the RF; Council on competitive ability and entrepreneurship under the Chairman of the RF Government; RF Government Commissions on administrative reform, on high technologies and innovations, on small and medium business. Alexander Shokhin is an independent member of the board of directors at Lukoil, RZhD and a number of other companies.
