Standard Courses (9 hrs/week)

Russian language courses are offered in the fall and spring semesters and are designed for students and faculty with different levels of Russian, from elementary to advanced.

Elementary-level courses focus on pronunciation and intonation, basic grammar structures, and basic vocabulary (survival Russian).

Intermediate- and advanced-level courses include reviewing Russian pronunciation and intonation, systematic review of grammar, increasing vocabulary, and developing fluency in different conversational situations.

Electives change due to availability and interest, but have included Russian through Literature and Film, Russian through Mass Media, and Business Russian. A complete list is available here.

Over the course of one semester, students take classes for 9 academic hours each week to earn a total of 6 ECTS credits. (One academic hour is 40 minutes.)
Each semester is divided into two modules; students can opt to complete only one module (8 weeks) to earn 3 ECTS credits.

For students already enrolled in HSE full-degree programmes:

As part of your study programme, you are entitled to take up to 6 ECTS credits (one semester) of Russian free of charge.
After the first semester, a tuition fee will be charged.

For Semester in Moscow (visiting and exchange) students:

As part of your study programme, you are entitled to take up to 6 ECTS credits (one semester) of Russian free of charge.

For international students not enrolled in any HSE programmes:

You are welcome to come and only study Russian language with us at HSE! Classes meet for 18 academic hours a week. Please fill out our information request form and we will promptly reply to your inquiry.

If you are interested in learning Russian, you will benefit enormously from studying at HSE and not only gain more knowledge of the language, but also of the country’s culture.

For international employees

International employees can join Russian classes that are held in groups of international students. If Russian classes are covered by your work contract, you will be informed about their beginning upon your arrival. If Russian language instruction is not part of your contract, you can still join group classes or get individual tutorial at your own expense. Please contact Olga Eremina for details.
