Danial Khataei

Danial Khataei is a Doctoral Researcher at the National Research University Higher School of Economics (HSE University), specialising in Iran–Southeast Asia relations, ASEAN's external relations, and Indo-Pacific geopolitics.
His dissertation, The Evolution of Iran–ASEAN Relations (1997–2024), examines Iran’s early “Look to the East” strategy, the Iran–ASEAN Corridor, and Southeast Asia’s evolving strategic landscape, with additional focus on sanctions-era diplomacy, regional connectivity, and ASEAN's strategic autonomy.
Danial is noted for analytical forecasts including the Saudi–Iranian rapprochement and the escalation of the Israel–Hamas conflict into a broader regional confrontation. His research draws on multilingual archival materials from the Iranian MFA, the ASEAN Secretariat, and Southeast Asian media.
In addition to numerous academic publications, he has contributed analytical commentary and op-eds to Iranian Diplomacy, RIA Novosti and IRAS, writing in English, Persian, and Russian on Iran–ASEAN relations, Indo-Pacific affairs, and transregional corridor development.
At HSE University, he is affiliated with the School of International Regional Studies, working on Indo-Pacific affairs, maritime connectivity, and the emerging China–ASEAN–GCC strategic triangle. His research interests include ASEAN foreign policy, Indo-Pacific regionalism, Iran–ASEAN relations, sanctions and international political economy, and Chinese-led projects in the Indo-Pacific.
