Rescheduling the Second Retake of a Course and its Repeated Study

Failed assignment, or academic failure refers to:

  • an unsatisfactory grade assigned for an interim assessment during a course (less than four points on a 10-point grading scale)
  • failure to take for no valid reason an interim assessment during a course
  • failure to take mandatory external assessment specified in the given degree programme’s curriculum or an institutional document issued by the University’s authorised official.

In accordance with the Regulations for Interim and Ongoing Assessments of Students at HSE University, retakes are organised within specified deadlines to clear academic failures: the first and second retakes. If academic failure remains after the second retake, the student is expelled.

After the first retake, students decide whether to proceed to the second retake immediately or to request an opportunity to postpone participation in the second retake for the repeated study of the discipline: to reattend the course, undergo all assessment elements, and then take part in the second retake. This right to repeat study can be exercised by a student who, following the results of the first retake, has outstanding debts in no more than two courses.

After the first retake, students with one or two failed assignments have the following options:

1. Opt for the second retake within the ongoing retake period

Attend the second retake on the scheduled date, and then:

  • If a satisfactory grade is received on the second retake (the third attempt to pass the exam) —> continue studies.
  • If an unsatisfactory grade is received on the second retake (the third attempt to pass the exam) —> dismissal for not fulfilling their obligations to diligently pursue the degree programme and follow the curriculum, with an opportunity of being reinstated as per the established procedure.

2. Choose not to participate in the second retake and instead request to repeat the course under the educational agreement on a component of the degree programme ( "repeated course")

Opt not to take the exam in the current period to avoid risk (e.g., due to a low cumulative grade or uncertainty about preparedness):

Procedure for Postponing the Second Retake

  1. Submit an application "To postpone the retake date for the course and for repeated study" through the Student Service Centre application before the scheduled date of the second retake.
  2. To repeat the study, it is necessary to sign an Agreement on mastering a specific component of the given degree programme.

The cost of services under the Agreement is calculated according to the Procedure for Calculating the Cost of Educational Services.
