Scientists from the Institute of Education at HSE University have shown that children with high levels of inattentiveness demonstrate lower performance in mathematics in primary school, and that this underachievement is more pronounced in girls than in boys. A similar correlation was not observed in the case of hyperactivity.

A recent study by IOE experts Alina Ivanova, Diana Kaiky and Yulia Kuzmina finds a link between the phonological ability of school starters (e.g., sensitivity to the sound composition of speech, the ability to identify individual sounds and syllables, etc.) and their capacity in math. The socio-economic status of the child’s family turns out to be an important modulator in the phonology–math relationship, the study suggests.

What Determines a First Grader’s Success

This year, 117 students graduated from doctoral programmes at the HSE campus in Moscow. On November 1, they received their graduation certificates. Some of them also defended their theses under a new procedure that was introduced at HSE this year, while the others will do this within the next year.

The more books in the family and the richer and more educated the parents, the more likely it is that the children will do well at school.

Elena Kardanova, the director of the Centre of Education Quality Monitoring, and Alina Ivanova, junior research fellow of the same centre, have participated in the annual meeting of the American Educational Research Association (AERA) held in Washington, DC. The conference dedicated to ‘Public Scholarship to Educate Diverse Democracies’ took place on April 7–12 and gathered around 14000 participants from all over the world.
