Course Syllabus

Abstract

Academic discipline “English for Specific Purposes. Information Technology and Computer Security” is implemented in the third year of the educational program "Cyber Security". The discipline is aimed at the development of professionally oriented foreign language communicative competence in English in the field of “Computer Security” (proficiency level B2+); moreover, the course is aimed at the development of academic skills required for the use of English in educational, scientific and professional purposes, further graduate and postgraduate studies, and also carrying out research in a given area. The course implies the study of relevant topics in the field of information technology and computer security, and the development of listening, reading, speaking and writing skills in English. During the course, a number of controlling elements are provided, including presentations, grammatical and lexical tests and summary. There are no blocking elements. Exam is held at the end of the 4th module.

  • non-blocking In-class work
    In-class work in 2-4 modules includes two presentations. Presentations are evaluated only if the student is present in the classroom. The final grade for the in-class work is calculated as the arithmetic mean of all presentations. This type of control is not to be retaken.
  • non-blocking Grammar and Vocabulary tests
    The number of questions and types of tasks in lexico-grammatical tests may vary. The total number of points received for the test is translated into a 10-point scale by proportion. The test can only be lexical, grammatical, or lexico-grammatical. The final grade for lexico-grammatical tests for the entire course, calculated at the end of module 4, includes grades for lexico-grammatical tests from modules 2 to 4 and is calculated as the arithmetic mean of all tests for 2-4 modules. This type of control is not to be retaken.
  • non-blocking Exam
    The exam consists of two parts: summary of an article (approximately 0.5 pages. A4; 5 min. preparation); and a monologue on a given topic (1 min. for preparation, 2 min. to the answer). The student can use the draft while preparing for the answer. It is forbidden to read during the response.
