o The number of asylum applications filed in EU-27 countries increased to almost a million in 2022

o Among first-time asylum applicants in the EU-27, citizens of Syria and Afghanistan predominate

o 43% of first-time asylum seekers are men aged 18-34

o In the EU-27 in 2022, 633 thousand first instance decisions and 218 thousand final decisions were made on asylum applications, of which 49% and 34%, respectively, were positive

o At the end of September 2023, almost 4.2 million people who fled Ukraine enjoyed temporary protection status in the EU27
