The HSE Institute of Demography is a research institution with a primary aim of supporting basic scientific research in order to improve research methodology.
Its main products are scientific monographs, articles in national and international scientific journals and presentations at scientific conferences and symposiums. Employees of the Institute have authored numerous articles in encyclopaedias and encyclopaedic dictionaries, summarizing scientific reports on the socio-demographic situation in Russia. These articles have been commissioned by Russian government agencies, various UN agencies (UN Development Programme, United Nations Population Fund, UNESCO, WHO, World Bank) and other international organizations.
The Institute works closely with government agencies to shape and implement social policies that have been studied by researchers. The Institute's staff members regularly take part in discussions with public authorities in order to help in making decisions on family policies, demographic and migration policies, and other official documents. They also help in formulating the common view on issues that Russia presents internationally.
Apart from cooperation with government agencies and decision makers, one of the primary goals of the Institute is constant provision of information on Russia’s demographic situation and demographic processes in other countries. Since 1993, Institute of Demography has published an annual analytical report entitled Russia's Population, which is intended not only for specialists and demographers, but also for everyone who is interested in demography, demographic history and Russia’s demographic future.
Since 2001, the Institute has been working on Demoscope Weekly, a major internet project that combines electronic newspapers and demographic development. Demoscope Weekly is currently one of the most popular electronic media in Russia concerning the social sciences.
Since 2014, the Institute has published an electronic peer-reviewed scientific journal called Demographic Review, which publishes articles by leading Russian and foreign demographers.
