Course Syllabus
Abstract
The English Language course prepares students to use English in their further academic study on the University of London external programme. This is understood as being a “competent user” as defined by the Association of Language Testers in Europe Level 3 and realized as IELTS band 6 (the student has generally effective command of the language despite some inaccuracies, inappropriacies and misunderstanding; can use and understand fairly complex language, particularly in familiar situations) or a “good user” – IELTS band 7 (the student has operational command of the language, though with occasional inaccuracies, inappropriacies and misunderstanding in some situations; generally handles complex language well and understands detailed reasoning). The obtained skills are examined in the form of the IELTS Academic Module taken externally and administered by an independent examination centre.
Learning Objectives
- - to have a good command of English grammar and vocabulary;
- - to possess academic reading skills which can enable students to skim the text for main idea, to scan the text for specific information, to interpret the text for inferences, attitudes and styles, to deduce meanings from the context;
- - to attain academic writing skills which will enable them to respond to input applying information to a specified task, to elicit, to select, to summarize information in a range of writing activities, such as essays, articles, reports;
- - to acquire academic listening skills to enable students to understand and apply specific information from the input;
- - to pick up academic speaking skills which can allow them to use general, social and professional language, to negotiate, report, explain, summarize and develop a discussion;
- - to own general capacity at a level that will enable them to use English in their professional and academic environment granted that they are provided with the specific notions and vocabulary of economics, mathematics, statistics, banking and finance in the course of their studies;
- - to have an ability to apply knowledge of the English language, to develop their social competence skills, to form their behavioural stereotypes and professional skills necessary for successive social adaptation of graduates.

Course Contents

- Academic Listening & SpeakingListening includes: - General comprehension (listening for gist, listening for detailed information, recognizing relevant/irrelevant information, signposting and importance markers, recognizing sentence connections: reference, addition, contrast, cause and effect, listing; evaluating the importance of information). - Lectures (identifying the topic and main themes, identifying relationships among major ideas, comprehending key information, identifying supporting ideas and examples, retaining information through note-taking, retrieving information from notes, inferring relationships between information supplied in a lecture, taking efficient notes from a lecture). Speaking includes: - Seminar skills (agreeing and disagreeing, clarifying, questioning, persuading, emphasizing, concluding, interrupting; evaluating ideas and actions, presenting solutions, recommending action, comparing and contrasting, probability and possibility, cause and effect, criticizing). - Presentation skills (introductions and stating the purpose, signposting, creating interest and involving audience, using rhetorical questions, emphasizing and highlighting key points, preparing the audience for visuals, how to use an OHP, summaries, conclusions and closing courtesies; body language and non-verbal communication).

- October Mock examДля студентов она дистанте экзамен проводится в письменной форме с использованием асинхронного прокторинга. Экзамен проводится на платформе https://hse.student.examus.net). К экзамену необходимо подключиться за 10 минут до начала. Проверку настроек компьютера необходимо провести заранее, чтобы в случае возникших проблем у вас было время для обращения в службу техподдержки и устранения неполадок. Компьютер студента должен удовлетворять требованиям: 1. Стационарный компьютер или ноутбук (мобильные устройства не поддерживаются); 2. Операционная система Windows (версии 7, 8, 8.1, 10) или Mac OS X Yosemite 10.10 и выше; 3. Интернет-браузер Google Chrome последней на момент сдачи экзамена версии (для проверки и обновления версии браузера используйте ссылку chrome://help/); 4. Наличие исправной и включенной веб-камеры (включая встроенные в ноутбуки); 5. Наличие исправного и включенного микрофона (включая встроенные в ноутбуки); 6. Наличие постоянного интернет-соединения со скоростью передачи данных от пользователя не ниже 1 Мбит/сек; 7. Ваш компьютер должен успешно проходить проверку. Проверка доступна только после авторизации. Для доступа к экзамену требуется документ удостоверяющий личность. Его в развернутом виде необходимо будет сфотографировать на камеру после входа на платформу «Экзамус». Также вы должны медленно и плавно продемонстрировать на камеру рабочее место и помещение, в котором Вы пишете экзамен, а также чистые листы для написания экзамена (с двух сторон). Это необходимо для получения чёткого изображения. Во время экзамена запрещается пользоваться любыми материалами (в бумажном / электронном виде), использовать телефон или любые другие устройства (любые функции), открывать на экране посторонние вкладки. В случае выявления факта неприемлемого поведения на экзамене (например, списывание) результат экзамена будет аннулирован, а к студенту будут применены предусмотренные нормативными документами меры дисциплинарного характера вплоть до исключения из НИУ ВШЭ. Если возникают ситуации, когда студент внезапно отключается по любым причинам (камера отключилась, компьютер выключился и др.) или отходит от своего рабочего места на какое-то время, или студент показал неожиданно высокий результат, или будут обнаружены подозрительные действия во время экзамена, будет просмотрена видеозапись выполнения экзамена этим студентом и при необходимости студент будет приглашен на онлайн-собеседование с преподавателем. Об этом студент будет проинформирован заранее в индивидуальном порядке. Во время выполнения задания, не завершайте Интернет-соединения и не отключайте камеры и микрофона. Во время экзамена ведется аудио- и видео-запись. Процедура пересдачи проводится в соответствии с нормативными документами НИУ ВШЭ.
