Course Syllabus

Abstract

This course is designed for one module (two sessions per week, one lecture session and one seminar). Participation in this course does not require special prerequisites. Students will be introduced to the use of a range of the most up-to-date international sources relating to the study of Muslim women in the MENA. Students will be able to answer the following two principal questions by the end of the course: “How has the situation of Muslim women in this culture area been changing throughout the modern age?” and “In what senses (if any at all) and to what extent the situation of Muslim women in this region distinctive and exceptional?” In doing so, students will be introduced to the following: - some key Islamic teachings that are essential for understanding the lectures, - the concepts of gender and gender empowerment, - a brief history of the women's movements in the region, - the concepts of feminism, Islamic feminism, and negotiating with patriarchy in the region, - the connections between religion, power, education and employment in the lives of Muslim women in this region, - Muslim women and art.
