Faculty: Faculty of Social Sciences

Educational Programme: Psychoanalysis and Psychoanalytical Psychotherapy (Master)

Year of Graduation: 2018

The aim of the study is to detect and evaluate the potential application of neuropsychoanalysis in the process of psychotherapeutic treatment. To effectively achieve the goal of the study, the following tasks were set: 1) To find and consider the main approaches to the study of the problem of the relationship between the brain and the psyche; 2) "Revive" the views of Sigmund Freud in the field of modern neuroscience; 3) To consider modern research and experiments in the field of neuropsychoanalysis and to present some conclusions that may have a direct impact on the practice of psychoanalysis and psychoanalytic psychotherapy. The work consists of three chapters. The first chapter of the work is devoted to the study of the problem of the relationship between the brain and the psyche, the assessment of the problem and the prospects for discovering the biological mechanisms of the human psyche based on the achievements of modern neuroscience. The second chapter presents a study of the work of Sigmund Freud "The Project of Scientific Psychology", as well as an overview of the main works of modern researchers in the field of neuropsychoanalysis, such as Mark Solms, Jaak Panksepp and Antonio Damasio. There are some conclusions, which may have a direct impact on the practice of psychoanalysis and psychoanalytic psychotherapy. The third chapter presents a clinical case, followed by a discussion in the light of the hypotheses and conclusions of neuropsychoanalytical studies. In general, the work shows that neuropsychoanalysis today is a growing intellectual movement that has won the right to independent existence. Moreover, the neuropsychoanalytical approach, fundamentally humanistic, combining research of the individual's unique experience, his subjective experiences, and objective measurements in the field of neuroscience, may be able to shed light on modern scientific discoveries in this field.
