Effects of Hairstyle Preference on Self-Esteem among University of Ghana Female Students

The study examined if there was a statistical significant difference between hairstyle preferences on self-esteem among female students in the University of Ghana. The researcher additionally examined if there was association between hairstyle preferences, academic achievement, age and self-esteem. Research participants filled a 20-item specific questions of hairstyle preference with pictures and Rosenberg self-esteem, Bankhead, Johnson Hair-Esteem scale where the two scales indices were calculated by averaging the scores of each item. Tukey post hoc test showed that there was no statistical difference (F (4,.084) = 1.29, p>0.05) between hairstyle preference and academic achievement of female students. Moreover, a correlation analysis results for age of respondents, self-esteem and hair-esteem showed that hair-esteem was generally related to self-esteem (p<.01) whiles age among female students did not correlate with hairstyle preference and self-esteem.
