The Problem of Choice of Noun Number Category in Japanese- English Translation

The Japanese language is known to have no obligatory category of noun number. However, interpreting noun context may often help to recover the number value signified by the noun group. This research endeavor to investigate what type of linguistic clues may be explored by translators from Japanese to reliably define noun number. The research is based on investigation of a parallel Japanese-English professional translation sample. The paper introduces the typological view of number values and number systems and introduces discussion to the question “Does Japanese have a category of number?”
