At the present stage of development of the country's economy, in the conditions of market relations, there is fierce competition between cargo carriers: between adjacent modes of transport and between carriers of one type of transport. Inland water transport is an integral part of the unified transport system of the Russian Federation. Today the main activity of inland water transport is the transportation of bulk goods, such as mineral construction materials, raw materials for metallurgical, construction and other industries, timber, oil and petroleum products. At the same time, in the Transport Strategy of the Russian Federation for the period up to 2030 is noted, that one of the most significant problems is the imbalance in the development of the transport system of Russia. About 1–1.5% of all cargo goods are transported on the inland waterways of the Russian Federation, however the main cargo traffic is carried by railways and autotransport. One of the main factors for the loss of competitiveness of inland water transport, along with infrastructural and other problems, the complexity of building new ships, is dynamic development of land-based modes of transport, the exclusion of water routes from the logistic chains of cargo delivery. The weak link in the aspect of interspecific transport competition Kama region basin of inland waterways, there is a shortage of logistic infrastructure in river ports, including logistic centers and dry ports. In the conditions of tough competition with road and rail transport, an inland water transport enterprise, in particular Port Kambarka JSC, in order to develop the company, it is necessary to take into account the current realities and trends in the freight transportation market in order to develop measures to increase the competitiveness of the port.
