Business Processes Management Transformation of Major Iron and Steel Company’s Energy Complex Under Integrated MES Introduction

This paper reviews business-processes transformation of a major Russian steelmaking company under the introduction of an integrated MES for its energy complex. The «Industry 4.0» trend has appeared because of IT-system’s complexity, productivity and functionality growth. It implies a quantum leap in the industry due to Big Data, digitalisation and cyber-physic systems implementation. This work contains research papers analysis that shows the ability of information systems to improve companies’ business-processes efficiency. A conclusion has been made that the introduction of a new generation of MES-level systems is the most promising for the Russian steelmaking industry. Business-processes models for the energy complex have been developed by the IDEF0 procedure with the purpose of optimisation potentials analysis. Maturity assessment of MES functions automatisation has been carried out using the example of a major iron and steel company’s energy complex. A maturity model and assessment procedure have been worked out for this purpose. Then the target maturity level has been defined which will make it possible to improve business-processes of the energy complex. As a result of the current and target levels comparison the requirements for MES have been made. The analysis of market offers, the company position and project risks have been performed. Summarising the results, a basic strategy for MES project execution has been defined. It uses the company’s strong points and minimises risks. Afterwards the roadmap has been developed and managerial recommendations have been given for each step of the project execution. At the end of the paper the target model of a transformed business-process under MES introduction has been created and the target model for business-processes management has been described on the basis of cascade KPI system.
