The Relationships between Trainer’s Beliefs and Social and Emotional Skills of Students, Involved in Professional Dance Sport

The aim of this study is to explore the relationship between coaches’ beliefs and a level of social and emotional skills such as goal achievement, teamwork and emotions' managment for children 10-12 and 14-16 years old involved into professional dance sport. Since various studies demonstrate different type of relationship between coaches’ beliefs and a level of social and emotional skills of sportsmen (Mageau А., Vallerand R., 2003; Turman P., Schrodt P., 2004) our task is to consider the specificity of ballroom dances and to find out what particular strategies are used by coaches and how these strategies affect a level of social and emotional skills of children involved in professional dance sport. The main instruments of the research are two questionnaires: 1. Adapted for dance sport coaches questionnaire NorBA aimed at researching the coaches’ beliefs on effective teaching and learning 2. Adapted questionnaire of social and emotional skills of primary and secondary school students developed in the National Research University Higher School of Economics An important aspect of this work is that sportsmen study at schools, which do not carry out educational activities in the framework of basic school subjects, and a large workload in Children and Youth Sport School restricts pupils to attend basic school. Thanks to the study results, we will define and specify the coaches’ beliefs on effective teaching and learning and will provide the recommendations for a successful development of training practices.
