American and South Korean TV series have become a landmark phenomenon of modern popular culture. The popularity of American TV shows is linked to the economic power, cultural and cinema dominance of the United States. At the same time, South Korean TV shows have gained massive popularity recently - in the last twenty years. Series in the genre of romance make up a significant part of the total volume of the series. The most interesting thing is to study how cultural and social differences between the United States and South Korea affect the creation of images of lovers on television screens. Another scope of this study is to describe the cinematographic techniques with the help of which the images of a man and a woman in love are created on the screens and to define how the line of their romantic relationships is built. In the study the following research methods were used: content analysis, typology method and comparative analysis. The empirical basis for the study is one of the most popular American TV series “Grey’s Anatomy” (screenwriter Shonda Rhimes, from 2005 to the present) and one popular Korean TV series “Descendants of the Sun” (screenwriter Kim Eun Sook, 2016). The anticipated result of the study is that we will formulate the main cultural and cinematographic differences between American and South Korean TV shows in creating images of lovers on the screen. The work consists of theoretical and practical chapters. The theoretical chapter explores and systematizes the concepts of romantic love, studies love concepts in American and South Korean cultures, analyzes the love story genre in Western and Asian cinema.
