Today the agricultural sector of the Russian Federation is undergoing a transformation, the transition from import substitution to export-oriented strategy. The policy of import substitution, the foundations of which were laid in 2013 and which received a new impulse after the events in Ukraine, gave significant results in the sector of agricultural production. In particular, the volume of imports of some categories of agricultural products was reduced and increase in their production was achieved. At the moment, the state faces a new challenge – to increase the volume of exports of agricultural products, using export-oriented strategy. The purpose of this study is to describe the strategy of export promotion in the Russian Federation and identify opportunities to increase exports of agricultural products to new markets. As an example, the Chinese market was chosen, as this country is one of the main trading partners of the Russian Federation, and cooperation in the field of agriculture between the two countries has a significant potential. The work sums up the results of the policy of import substitution outlines the main problems that hinder the further implementation of the strategy, considers the theoretical aspects of stimulating the export of agricultural products in foreign countries and the Russian Federation, and described the prospects of Russian products to the Chinese market. As a result, the barriers that need to be removed to gain a new market were identified.
