The current research investigates the most popular translations of the Jerome K Jerome’s novel “Three Men in a Boat (To Say Nothing of the Dog)”, one being created by Mikhail Salie and the other – by Mikhail Donskoy and Elga Linetskaya, The analysis of several reviews on each of the translations demonstrated that these two works are fundamentally different. It follows from the fact that the readers’ perception of the translations vary depending on the variant of translation they read. The majority of readers found the translation of M. Donskoy and E. Linetskaya funnier. However, those who preferred the translation of M. Salie pointed at “britishness” of this work. Therefore, the main objective of this study is to discover how such effects on readers’ perception are reached, what strategy and technics each of the translators used. For this purpose, the comparative analysis of translations was conducted. To understand how certain instruments of translation influence readers’ perception the special survey based on semantic differential techique was conducted.
