Narrative as a Player Reward

This study considers narrative as a valuable game element and analyzes its potential use as a player reward. Based on the formal analysis of video games, the main realizable forms of presentation of narrative are studied, the types of game rewards are classified and reinterpreted in accordance with the already formulated categorization of Yana and Neil Hallford, in the context of which the value of such rewards at different stages of the video game is examined. The research suggests the best ways to implement the narrative into the game, and also determines in which cases the narrative reward may be appropriate.
