The Image of Russia in Spanish Mass Media through the Prism of Russian-Ukrainian Relations (on the Basis of the Newspaper "El Pais")

We assume that in the context of the Ukrainian crisis Russia is globally, especially by European countries and the USA, perceived negatively. However, the question of how Russia’s role in the crisis negotiations is interpreted still remains, particularly by Spain, which Russia has been keeping diplomatic, economic, and cultural relations with for a long period of time and which was one of those countries that although criticized the annexation of Crimea, advocated for sustaining relationship between Russia and Europe. A quantitative content analysis was used in order to examine a number of articles published by Spanish newspaper “El País” within the period from 2014 to 2019, covering the key events of the Ukrainian crisis negotiation process, to identify what image of Russia this periodical created.
