Filmmakers of the XXI century continue to address Russian classical literature including the texts of Leo Tolstoy and «War and peace» in particular. While transferring a novel of this scale on screen they inevitably face a number of specific problems related to the poetics of Tolstoy's works. This paper examines the recent adaptation of "«War and peace» by BBC in order to track how creators of the series solve these problems and how the narrative of the novel changes thanks to the author's vision of director Tom Harper and screenwriter Andrew Davies. The work aims to trace the modernisation of Tolstoy and study how it is perceived by film critics and affects the final success of the film product.
